Lagavulin Distillery

Classic Malt

The Brand

The standard Lagavulin 16 year old single malt, though regularly released as a 12-year-old cask strength Distiller's edition, finished in Pedro Ximénez casks, plus 25 year old and 30 year-old varieties.

Lagavulin is produced by Diageo plc and is marketed under their Classic Malts brand.

History

Since 1816, Lagavulin Single Malt Scotch Whisky has been made in a picturesque huddle of buildings on Lagavulin Bay. Perhaps the most beautifully situated of distilleries, Lagavulin makes arguably the most intensely flavoured, smoky and rich whisky of all.

Long fermentation, long distillation and long maturation together ensure that Lagavulin develops all of its long, rich, peaty character.

It receives the slowest distillation of any Islay malt - around five hours for the first distillation and more than nine hours for the second. This long distillation is often said to give Lagavulin™ the characteristic roundness and soft, mellow edges that devotees rightly prize.

For many, Lagavulin is the definitive Islay malt.

Awards

International spirits ratings competitions have generally given Lagavulin's 16-year spirit extremely high scores. The San Francisco World Spirits Competition, for instance, gave the 16 year four consecutive double gold medals between 2005 and 2008 and has awarded it gold medals in the years since.
